Anguilla is still feeling the negative impact of the September 2001 disaster that occurred in the United States and the economic slow down in North America. Visitor arrivals which include Day and Stay Over visitors to the island for the month of October were 3,803, a 28% decline when compared with October 2000 when 5,302 visitors came to the island. The total number of visitors to date is 88,862 a 3.4% decline when compared to 92,047 in 2000.
Tourist or Stay Over visitor arrivals for this month were 1,596. This is the lowest recording since 1995 when 871 tourists visited Anguilla. The Tourist arrivals showed a decline of 3% compared to 2000 when there were 1,650 for the same period. Overall, for the first 10 months of this year, Tourist arrivals totaled 39,945. This is an increase of 15% compared to the same period last year.
Excursionists (Day Visitors) arrivals to the island for October showed a decline of 39% when compared to October 2000. Arrivals were recorded at 2,201 in 2001 compared to 3,652 for October 2000. This decline can be attributed to the decline in arrivals in St.Martin, which is also experiencing the impact of the economic slow down in North America. A vast majority of Anguilla’s excursionist arrivals travel from St. Martin/Maarten.
Tourist arrivals in October from the U.S.A accounted for 50% of the market share, compared to 42% in October 2000. The Caribbean accounted for 29% in 2001 compared to 39% for October 2000. Italy and Germany represented 2% and 1.3% of the market share for arrivals during the month of October for both 2000 and 2001. Canada, United Kingdom and Other Europe represented market shares of 2%, 8% and 4% respectively when compared to 3% 8% and 7% respectively for October 2000.
