In
2001, there were 86,260 Visitor Arrivals (which include Day and Stay over
Visitors) to Anguilla. This represents a 5.4% increase from 2000, when 81,838
visitors came to these shores. The
major source of this increase was from tourists rather than excursionists.
The September 11th tragedy
and the economic downturn in the US, affected tourist arrivals for the last
four months of the year.
Tourist
or Stay over visitor arrivals, which make a larger contribution
to the economy than excursionists was recorded at 47,944.
This is a 9.5% increase from the 43,737 tourists that visited Anguilla
in 2000. January, February and April all showed significant increases
of 25% each for 2001, with April recording 6,053 arrivals, the highest total
for the entire year. The month of
December recorded the largest decline, although September, October and
November also registered declines averaging 7.4%.
Most tourists stayed for 4 to 15 days, which make up 77% of all tourists. 15% stayed for less than 4 days and 8% stayed for 16 days and over
Excursionist
arrivals to the island for 2001 increased by a mere 0.6%, when compared to
2000. Arrivals were recorded at 38,316, compared to 38,101 in 2000.
In
terms of market share, the U.S.A. continues to be the main source of Tourist
arrivals accounting for 63% of the overall arrivals in this category during
2001. Arrivals from this market increased by 21%, despite the tragedy that
took place during the 3rd quarter of 2001.
While at 15.3%, it maintains its position as the second most important
source market, tourist arrivals for the Caribbean increased by 7.8% in 2001.
Arrivals from Italy and Canada, saw declines of 26.5% and 16.8%,
accounting for 5.7% and 2.6% of the market share respectively.
The United Kingdom, Germany and the Rest of Europe, all accounted for
6%, 1% and 4% respectively.
Excursionist
arrivals to Anguilla through the port of Blowing Point (which is one of the
two main ports for this type of visitor) for 2001 were recorded at 37,316 when
compared to 36,957 in 2000. Excursionist
arrivals through the Airport were 1,000 for 2001, compared to 1,144 in 2000. Overall Visitor arrivals through the Ports of Blowing Point
and the Airport for 2001 were 54,190, and 32,070 respectively, compared to
53,259 and 28,575 in 2000.
