Anguilla: International Merchandise Trade Statistics Summary

Quarter, January – March 2003
Imports are recovering slowly this year after recording a 10% decline for 2002 over 2001. There was a 9.4% increase in international merchandise trade imports to Anguilla for the first quarter of 2003 compared to 2002. Imports still have not recovered to their 2001 levels. The 1st quarter 2003 import figure was still 20% less than that recorded for the same period in 2001. EC$49.2 million dollars worth of goods were imported between January and March 2003 compared to EC$45.0 million in 2002. February had the largest increase of 27% while March recorded the smallest with a 1% increase.
Food products, beverages and tobacco, machinery and transport equipment (trucks), were some of the major contributors to the increase for this period. For the 1st quarter 2003, EC$3.0 million more in Consumption Goods were imported than in the previous year, which amounted to a 12% increase in this category when compared to 2002. Capital goods increased by 7% and primary goods also increased by 5% for this period compared to the 1st quarter 2002.
Exports were valued at EC$2.4 million, a 4.2% increase during the 1st quarter 2003 compared to last year. Domestic exports accounted for just over half (EC$1.3 million) of the overall exports for this period. February had the largest volume in Domestic Exports for this period of EC$690,991.
The international merchandise trade deficit for the 1st quarter was EC$46.7 million, a 9.6% increase compared to EC$42.6 million in 2002.
