Anguilla:  International Merchandise Trade Statistics Summary

September 2004

 

Imports to Anguilla for the month of September, were up 54 percent, compared to September 2003.  Total value of merchandise imports was recorded at EC$27.5 million in comparison to EC$17.9 million for 2003. 

 

To date, imports have increased by 33.6 percent over the same period in 2003.  The value of imports in 2004 from January to September was EC$ 196.8 million compared with EC$147.2 million last year.

 

Imports of Consumption, Primary and Capital Goods increased during this month by 52.9, 45.7 and 61 percent respectively.

 

Capital Goods had the largest percentage increase during this period of 61 percent; an increase in the value of goods imported by EC$3.2 million.   Machinery and Transport Equipment is the only component of this group and goods included in this category such as, heavy equipment, construction vehicles and bakery machinery were some of the major contributors to the increase within this category.

 

Consumption Goods increased by 53 percent with the Miscellaneous manufactured articles category carrying the largest increase within this group of 155.3 percent).  The importation of wooden furniture, electrical fittings and paintings  attributed to the large increase.  Imports within the consumption goods group increased in value by EC$4.8 million.

 

The imports of sand, banana plants, lubricating oils, propane gas and paints contributed to the 45.7 percent overall increase in Primary Goods.  Imports within this group rose in value by EC$1.5 million.

 

The total value in duty collected for goods imported this month using the ASYCUDA system was EC$3.3 million compared to EC$2.6 million in September 2003.  Total value in duty collected at the port of Blowing Point was EC$180,638.32 compared to EC$150,707.27 during September last year.

 

Exports (which include re-exports and domestic exports) were EC$873,061 a 56 percent decline from the EC$1.9 million in September 2003.  Domestic exports which totaled EC$74,991 during this period compared to EC$784,056 in September last year, accounted for 8.5 percent of overall exports.  Re-exports totaled EC$798,070 compared to EC$1.2 million in for the same period last year.  The re-exports, consisted of heavy equipment.

 

For September 2004, Anguilla’s Balance of Trade was in deficit by EC$26.7 million (i.e. imports exceeding exports).  The deficit increased by 67.7 percent, when compared to the same period for 2003.
