Anguilla: International Merchandise Trade Statistics Summary
Imports to Anguilla continued to show strong increases in November, continuing the trend, which started in September 2003. Imports for the month of November increased by 29% compared to November 2002. Total value of merchandise imports was recorded at EC$20.7 million in comparison to EC$ 16.0 million for 2002. November this year was the third month in which imports were significantly higher than the corresponding months of 2002. The primary sources of this increase were in imports of Consumption Goods mainly of Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles, and of Manufactured Goods Classified Chiefly by Materials. Mineral Fuels, Lubricants and Related Materials and Machinery and Transport Equipment also contributed significantly to the overall increase in imports for the month.
For the first eleven months of the year, imports increased 9.9% with strengthening starting in September.
Consumption Goods imports
increased by 38.6% in November 2003 compared to November last year. The main sources of this increase were
Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles, which increased by 81.6 % and Manufactured
Good Classified Chiefly by Materials, which experienced a 43.7 % increase over
2002. The Miscellaneous Manufactured
Articles category includes air conditioners, lighting fixtures, clothing,
bedroom and kitchen appliances.
Manufactured Goods Classified Chiefly by Materials includes tyres, rods,
tiles, and sheets of plywood. The large
increases in these two categories may have been due to stocks being run down
over the past two years and increased demand this year for redecorating and
refurnishing for the Christmas season.
Primary Goods imports increased by
8.6% in November 2003 compared to November 2002. Crude Material, Inedible, except Fuels decreased dramatically by
63.4%. In contrast, Mineral
Fuels, Lubricants and Related Materials, which includes petroleum gas,
liquefied propane and other gases increased by an even more dramatic 158
%. The balancing effect of the movement
in these two categories of Primary Goods was the modest 8.6 % increase in
Primary Goods.
Capital Goods imports consisting
of the single category, Machinery and Transport Equipment increased by 20.5 %
in November 2003 over the same month in 2002.
The overall spending picture of the economy suggested by these import figures is that consumption activity currently outstrips investment activity.
The total year to date figure for
Exports is EC$11,014,331. Exports for
this reporting period were valued at EC$499,942, a 6.5% increase from November
2002. Domestic exports accounted for
62.7% of the overall exports for November 2003. It should be noted that overall exports include goods, which were
previously imported into Anguilla. Rum
exports totaling $266,000 accounted for 53.3% of the total exports for
November. .
November 2003 recorded a trade
balance of EC$20.2 million in deficit, a 29.5% increase in the deficit compared
to November 2002.
