2003
Hotel Occupancy rates for January 2003 increased 22.3% over 2002. This increase comes after a 14.1% decline experienced in December 2002. Occupancy for this month averaged 53.7% compared to 43.9% in 2002 and 43.1% in 2001. For the month of January tourist arrivals were also up but by a lesser percentage of 3.9% compared to January 2002.
Occupancy rates at large hotels i.e. with 51+ rooms,
were at near to full capacity. They also showed the largest increase from January
2002 and the medium sized i.e.:20 to 50 rooms category, increased in
occupancy for January by 16.5%, while small hotels i.e.
those with less than 20 rooms declined 9.1%.
Most of the larger tourist establishments were recording high occupancy
levels for this reporting period.
Occupancy rates for small hotels for the period January 2002 averaged 30.8% compared to 33.9% in 2001. Large Hotels showed a 40% increase in January relative to last year. This category had a combined average occupancy of 94.3%, whilst hotels with 20 to 50 rooms averaged 35.9% occupancy in January 2003 compared to 30.8% for the same period in 2002.
