Anguilla: International Merchandise Trade Statistics Summary

4th Quarter, October – December 2003

 

Anguilla’s fourth quarter imports for 2003 (October – December) reached EC$60.0 million, a 24.8% overall increase over the same period in 2002 when imports totalled EC$48.1 million. During the period under examination there was a 33.1% increase in Consumption Goods, and both Primary and Capital Goods showed increases of 15%.

 

The increase in imports of Consumption Goods in the fourth quarter of 2003 over the same period in 2002 was due mainly to the increase in Manufactured Goods Classified Chiefly by Materials which include items such as leather, tyres, inner tubes, bottle covers etc. and Miscellaneous Manufacturing Articles which include goods such as ceramic lavatory set, wooden furniture, clothing, footwear, hair appliance, by 50.3% and 45.1% respectively. The other categories all showed moderate increase over the 2002 corresponding figures.

 

This increase in imports in Primary Goods was largely due to increases in the category of Minerals Fuels, Lubricants and Related Materials of 44.7%, which includes items such as, are diesel oil, motor spirit oil, and kerosene.  Imports of Crude Materials, Inedible, except fuels registered a decline of 17.7%. 

 

The 15.0% increase in imports of Capital Goods this quarter, over the corresponding period in 2002 could be attributed to the importation of vehicles and heavy machinery to the island.

 

Exports for this reporting quarter were valued at EC$1.49 million, a 17.3% decline over the fourth quarter of 2002.  Domestic exports accounted for 63.3% of the overall exports during the quarter.  It should be noted that overall exports include goods, which were previously imported to Anguilla.  Some of these are goods sent overseas for repair and others are equipment, which could have been used on a rental basis from companies overseas.

 

The fourth quarter produced a recorded trade balance of EC$58.5 million in deficit a 26.5% increase over the corresponding 2002 period.
