International Merchandise Trade Statistics Summary
Imports for the second quarter 2002 were down 6% in relation to the same period for 2001. This second quarter has shown a significantly smaller decline than the first quarter when imports were down 26.6%. Total merchandise imports to Anguilla for the 2nd quarter 2002 was EC$50.7 million. To date April has been the only month this year to record an increase, which was 4.6%. For the first six months of the year imports declined 17% when compared to the same period for 2001.
The major sources contributing to the decline for the 2nd quarter 2002 were foodstuff and construction materials such as sand and stone.
Most exports out of Anguilla are the re-exportation of items. For the 2nd qtr 2002 exports amounted to EC$3.7 million compared to EC$1.4 million for the same reporting period in 2001. Such a large increase was mainly due to the re-export of heavy equipment. Domestic exports accounted for 13.4% of the overall export figure compared to 14.5% in 2001.
April to June 2002 had a recorded trade balance of EC$46.9 million in deficit, a 10.4% decline compared to 2001. This reduction is favourable from a trade standpoint but it also means that it will have an unfavourable impact on the Government’s budget due to a reduction in the amount of import duties collected.
The figures for imports and exports/re-exports
represent the total record on customs documents brought to account at that
period. They do not necessarily
represent the actual total amount of goods imported into the country or
exported from the country during that period.
However, the customs records account for the major percentage by far of
total merchandise imports.
