New Jetty At Sandy Ground Offically Opened The newly built jetty in Sandy Ground was officially opened on Sunday December 3rd, 2006. It has a landing apron of 1600 square feet. It’s design is such that it is lower than the other pier to the immediate South so that cargo vessels with ramps can access it more readily for the roll on and roll off cargo operations.
The jetty was constructed by Edghill and Associates of Barbados. Government has been actively seeking to bring an end to the congestion, frustrations and dangerous situations at Blowing Point. This new jetty will facilitate all the cargo trade presently and afford the Blowing Point piers to be used solely as a ferry terminal for departures and arrivals.
The handing over ceremony was conducted by Mr. Fritz Smith who is the Chairman of the Port Development Board. He mentioned the ongoing port development at Blowing Pont and the project slated for 2008 at Corito as a major Deep Water Harbour.
Minister of Infrastructure Kenneth Harrigan thanked Edhill and spoke of the involvement of his staff in making the pier a reality. The Minister highlighted the plans for small crusie ships, yachts and other pleasure seekers utilize the Sandy Ground areas for shopping and restaurants when Corito is developed.
Permanent Secretary Kenn Banks who recently retired also spoke of the good relations he had with Edhill and their commitment to developing Anguilla. Richard Edghill expressed his gratitude to the Anguillian public for affording him the opportunity to serve them again in this area.
The Honourable Chief Minister was present as was the Governor an dhis wife, Honourable Victor Banks and his wife, A.G. Scipio and others. |
